The North East-based, multifaceted artist known as Richie Harrison, has created more than just music with his newest single, he’s created a movement.
Harrison’s release, ‘Oh No!’ is a poignant dive into the depths of mental health struggles, presenting an evocative and raw portrayal of internal battles faced in silence. This track follows the success of his previous hit, ‘Best You’ve Had’, and marks a significant evolution in Harrison’s musical journey.
Harrison explains, “I suffer more with my anxiety at night when I’m lying in bed and my mind starts racing. ‘This song ‘Oh No!’ is about those exact feelings and how thoughts can creep into your mind and take over.”
As a solo artist and a member of the heavy punk rock band TNCS, Harrison is no stranger to the music scene. Although, he likes to utilise these two creative outlets to experiment with very different sounds, channeling his emotive songwriting skills in multiple ways. “I can always tell which songs are right for me, and which songs are right for the band”, Harrison says. “It’s nice to have both options for songwriting.”
From the first note, ‘Oh No!’ captivates with its haunting melody and dark undertones. Harrison’s powerful vocals convey a sense of urgency and vulnerability, making the listener feel every emotion embedded in the lyrics. The song’s introspective nature allows it to serve as both a personal catharsis for the artist and a resonant anthem for anyone grappling with similar issues.
The lyrics are stark and honest, shedding light on the often unspoken realities of mental health challenges. Lines such as, “Oh no, are you going to leave?” and “Oh no, are you make believe?” highlight the duality of despair and ambiguity. The music, with its intricate layering and atmospheric depth, enhances the emotional weight of the song, creating an unforgettable listening experience.
The topic of mental health is viewed and interpreted in different ways for each individual, so it’s important for all musicians, big or small, to openly discuss it. Harrison notes, “Music is helping me the most with my anxiety and my struggles. Especially Idles – they have been great with opening up about mental health for people who are into alternative music. It’s an important topic overall so it needs to be talked about more, and music is a great way of doing that.”
Harrison’s ability to blend poignant storytelling with compelling musicality makes “Oh No!” a standout track. His work continues to push boundaries, and this single is a testament to his growth as an artist. By addressing such a critical topic with sincerity and artistry, Harrison not only entertains but also fosters a much-needed conversation about mental health.
‘Oh No!’ is now available on all streaming platforms.
